Kariba Dam Early Warning System (Zambia)
Jomiso developed a state-of-the-art Flood Early Warning System (EWS) for the
Kariba Dam, one of Africa’s largest reservoirs, located on the Zambezi River. The system was
designed to strengthen the region’s disaster preparedness by providing real-time flood forecasting and
early alerts across a 280 km downstream corridor.
The project integrated hydraulic and hydrological modelling with advanced telemetry
systems to simulate and analyse multiple controlled release scenarios. Comprehensive
inundation maps were prepared to identify at-risk areas, supporting proactive evacuation
planning and infrastructure protection measures for local communities.
Covering nearly 3 million people across Zambia and Zimbabwe, the EWS serves as a vital
decision-support tool for the Zambezi River Authority, enhancing dam operation safety,
transboundary coordination, and emergency response readiness.
